Legal Metrology Service
NSAI Legal Metrology Service (LMS) is the statutory body responsible for regulating and supervising weights and measures in the Republic of Ireland.
LMS is responsible for:
• Maintaining a uniform system of units of measurement
• Ensuring the accuracy of measuring instruments used in trade
• Maintaining confidence in the measurement of quantities of goods on sale to consumers.
• Representing Irish business and consumers on matters of legal metrology at national and international level.

Primary Legislation
The Legal Metrology Service operates within three statutes cited as the Metrology Acts 1980 to 1998, comprising:
The Packaged Goods (Quantity Control) Act 1980, (No. 11 of 1980) sets out the controls for filling and checking of prepackaged goods of predetermined constant quantities.
The Metrology Act, 1996 (No 27 of 1996) established the Legal Metrology Service and the post of Director of Legal Metrology and is the main piece of legislation that regulates matters related to Legal Metrology in Ireland
The Industrial Development Act 1998 (No 34 of 1998) part VIII of which transferred the Legal Metrology Service from within Forbairt to within the National Standards Authority of Ireland.
