The National Consumer Agency was established under the Consumer Protection Act 2007 (PDF, 562KB) with effect from the 1st May 2007. The new Agency’s specific mandate includes advocacy, research, information, enforcement, education and awareness. The Agency enforces a wide range of consumer protection laws, including laws on deceptive trading practices (including unfair, misleading and aggressive), consumer credit, package travel, unfair contract terms, timeshare, consumer safety (mandatory standards), food labelling, textile labelling, unit pricing and price displays. The Central Bank Reform Act 2010 transferred the consumer education and information roles of the Financial Regulator to the Agency with effect from the 1st January 2011. The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) ComReg is the statutory body responsible for the regulation of the electronic communications sector (telecommunications, radiocommunications and broadcasting transmission) and the postal sector. Comreg has a special site for consumers called www.askcomreg.ie which provides information about telecommunications and the postal sector. With the enactment of new legislation on July 12th 2010, responsibility for the regulation of the Premium Rate Services market in Ireland now rests with ComReg. |

The Small Claims Procedure is a means for resolving disputes about goods and services where the amount involved is less than ¤2,000. It is a cheap and speedy means of resolving disputes about goods and services. The Registrar of the District Court will try to solve the dispute without recourse to a court hearing. If this does not succeed, the case goes to the District Court for a hearing. Information on how to use the service is available from the Registrar. A small processing fee is payable. Contact your local district court for an application. Alternatively, you can download an online form. |
