Our Role

The role of this section is to act as a liaison between the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and the Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB).

PIAB was established on the 13^th of April 2004 by Ministerial Order pursuant to the Personal Injuries Assessment Act 2003. All personal injury claims arising from workplace accidents, where an employee is seeking compensation from his/her employer and all personal injuries arising from motor liability and public liability claims must be referred to the Personal Injuries Assessment Board for assessment of compensation due. In certain circumstances PIAB may issue authorisation for legal proceeding to be initiated.

The establishment of the Personal Injuries Assessment Board was one of the key initiatives in reforming the process of the delivery of compensation in personal injury cases.

With PIAB using the Book of quantum as an aid, the amount of compensation that will be received by claimants will continue to be at the level equal to that awarded before the establishment of PIAB, while the delivery costs and timeframes will be greatly reduced. The intention is to eliminate the need for litigation costs where legal issues are not in dispute.

The PIAB was also part of the Government’s Insurance Reform Programme and was one of the recommendations of the Motor Insurance Advisory Board.

The establishment of the PIAB will lead to a reduction in the cost of insurance premia to the benefit of both consumers and businesses alike.

This Department no longer has responsibility for insurance undertakings. The Central Bank Reform Act 2010, created a new single unitary body – The Central Bank of Ireland – responsible for both central banking and financial regulation. This new structure replaced previous related entities and is now responsible for practically all of the financial services industry, including insurance and the services provided by it.
