New Procedures for Employment Permits for Doctors

The Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, the Department of Health and Children, the Health Service Executive and The Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service have agreed revised arrangements regarding employment permits for non-EEA doctors who are recruited to the Irish Public HealthService. The arrangements will be subject to review in 12 months time.
From 21st June 2010 the following arrangements will apply depending on the doctor's registration with the Irish Medicial Council as follows:-
- Trainee Specialist Division - Internship Registration: Employment Permit is required from the Department of Jobs, Enterrpise and Innovation.
- Other doctors in Trainee Specialist Division – do not require an Employment Permit.
- General Division - Non-EEA non-Consultant Hospital Doctors with a job offer as a Senior House Officer or Registrar in the Public Health Service do not require a work permit.
- Other doctors in General Division - Employment Permit is required from the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.
- Specialist Division - Employment Permit is required from the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.
Employers and employees should ensure that Employment Permit requirements are complied with.
Labour Market Needs Test
No labour market needs test will apply to Work Permit applications in respect of Doctors.
