Ballinasloe Benefits From Budget

Mr. Noel Treacy T.D., Minister for Science, Technology and Commerce, has today (Wednesday 2nd December, 1998) warmly welcomed the decision by his Government Colleague, Mr Charlie McCreevy T.D., for the inclusion of £500,000, in todays Budget for the construction, of the Ballinasloe Town/River Suck Marina.

Minister Treacy said "I originally sanctioned the Navigation of the River Suck and allocated £1.5m for same in 1992. I had originally included a Town Marina in the Project back then, but after I left office, the marina decision vanished in a Mid-Term Review of European Funds, in our National Development Plan. I have worked assiduously on this Project over the years and today, through the co-operation of my Government Colleagues, Ministers Charlie McCreevy and Síle De Valera, we have included the necessary £0.5m in todays Budget.

I know that this decision will underpin our original investment and confer huge economic and touristic benefits on Ballinasloe, East Galway and South Roscommom, in the years ahead. The construction of the Marina, on a Site, donated by Ballinalsoe UDC, will commence early next year, under the Office of Shannon Navigation/Dúchás."
