Enterprise Ireland Day Kick Starts Science Week Science & Enterprise - The Best of Irish Science

Mr Noel Treacy, T.D., Minister for Science, Technology and Commerce today (Friday 5th November, 1999) urged young people to “think seriously about the enormous possibilities of science and technology and the diverse range of exciting career opportunities it can bring.” The Minister was speaking at the Enterprise Ireland annual interactive science exhibition for young people in the RDS Dublin which was attended by almost 5000 young people aged between 10 – 17 years.

Minister Treacy said “the purpose of today is to explore with young people the very many aspects of science and technology in an informative an entertaining way. I hope students will leave this event understanding that science is about creativity and fun and how it can enrich your life and give you the opportunity to play an important part in the development of our country.

Lecture demonstrations on stage include Colour is Fun – the impact of colour on the eye and the brain, The Science Behind Special Effects- the technology of special effects in movies and TV and a music, workshop on The Science of Sound. Compere for the day is Keelin Shanley of RTE’s Science programme, Future Tense. Also on view are the Computer Gym, sponsored by ESAT Telecom and, Bertie Z-tron Robot.

According to Mr Feargal Ó Móráin, Director, Science and Innovation and Corporate Support Services “The projects on show here today are intended to tell the story of the creativity and excitement of science. I hope today’s exhibition and the other events been held around the country as part of science week will help communicate the excitement of science to our young people – for after all they are the workforce of the future.”
