Mr. Noel Treacy T.D., Minister for Science, Technology and Commerce today (Wednesday 13th January 1999) warmly welcomed the publication by the National Road Authority of the funding for the National Roads Programme for 1999.
A total of £337 million has been allocated for 1999, which is almost £50 million or 17% more than last year. These allocations to local authorities will deliver or significantly advance work on many major road projects throughout the country over the coming year. Funding has also been allocated for road safety measures such as traffic calming, improved delineation and road signage, and remedial measures at high risk areas.
A total of £35.7million has been allocated to the local authorities in the Western region (Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and Leitrim) for both improvement and maintenance. Galway County Council has been allocated £6.835million and among the Projects for improvement allocations are Aughrim/Cappataggle Road (£800,000); the Ballinasloe By-pass (£150,000): the Loughrea By-pass (£250,000); Loughrea/Galway (£100,000); the N6/N18 TRL Loughrea/Gort (£50,000); Craughwell (£30,000); Milltown/Kilclooney/Co.Boundary (£250,000);Traffic Calming Ardrahan/Kilcolgan (£80,000); Gort/Crusheen (£200,000); Annagh Hill, Ballyglunin (£150,000); Hearnsbrook/Killimor realignment (£300,000); Traffic Calming Loughrea (£30,000); Peterswell (£80,000); and Ballinderreen (£90,000).
Minister Treacy said "I am delighted with these allocations, which will enable valuable work to be carried out on improving our roads. This record level of funding is further proof of the Government's commitment to improving our National, Regional and Local Roads infrastructure, which will make a continuing contribution to both economic development and road safety ."
