TREACY ANNOUNCES ANGLING INVESTMENT

Mr. Noel Treacy, T.D., Minister for Science, Technology & Commerce has to-day (22.09.99), announced a Major Investment of £178,000 for the Lough Loung Course Angling Development (Glinsk) and the Banagher to Portumna Course Angling Developments.

Minister Treacy stated “ I am absolutely delighted with the approval of Funding under the Tourism Angling Measure for these Projects, which will now ensure that the River Shannon and Lough Loung can be further developed. This initiative will enhance the already exceptional reputation of the River Shannon as a Tourist and Angling Attraction.

Lough Loung, Glinsk, has been allocated almost £80,000, for a Course Angling Project. This is the latest in a series of Angling Developments which will create 25 additional spaces on the Lough.

A total of £98,000 has been approved for Portumna/Banagher Project and this will result in the creation of 70 new Angling Spaces. This Project on the River Shannon, includes the Fisheries at Esker, Meelick, the Shebeen Stretch near Tiernascragh, Ballycrissane and at Portumna itself. As fishermen will know, the Shannon is very wide and deep at this location and has very good stocks of Roach, Bream and Pike.

"I have fought very hard for these Projects and I wish to pay tribute to the Local Organisations in Glinsk, Meelick, Ballycrissane, Tiernascragh and Portumna, along with the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board and its Staff, for their initiative and co-operation, in bringing these Projects to fruition” concluded Minister Treacy.
