Tánaiste Presents North-West Regional Community Initiative Awards

Mary Harney, Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment today (Friday 2nd June 2000) presented the FAS North-West Regional Community Initiative Awards in the Tower Hotel, Sligo.

Speaking at the presentation the Tánaiste said "The Community Initiative Awards, which are now in their eight year, are an acknowledgement and celebration of the quality, depth and extent of work being undertaken by more than 200 community projects in Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal".

Congratulating the winners the Tánaiste said "the concept of providing training and employment through community based projects and developing a partnership between FAS and local community interest is at the centre of the Community Initiative Awards. The result of this partnership is clearly demonstrated by the diversity of entries to this years competition and I am delighted to see that an economic objective in now central to the work of many communities".

There are over 3000 FAS sponsored community projects throughout the country and "they make a significant contribution in encouraging income generation, employment creation and improved community services"., said the Tánaiste.

The range of activities of the community projects vary from construction, restoration and renovation of buildings to community services such as information, advice, sports and recreation.

The Tánaiste congratulated all those who participated in the competition and in particular the award winners. She said "their dedication, commitment and hard work in contributing to community development was very evident and was an example of the inspiring work carried out by the voluntary sector throughout the country. Their work is of great benefit both to participants and those who will benefit either directly or indirectly as a result of their work".
