Tánaiste Appoints Independent Group to Investigate Alleged Anti Competitive Practice in the Beef Industry

Mary Harney, Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment today (Wednesday 19th January 2000) announced that following a decision at today's Government meeting, an Independent Group will be appointed to examine allegations of anti competitive practice in the Beef Industry and also to establish why there is such a large differential between the producer price and the prevailing consumer price.

Speaking after the Government meeting the Tánaiste said that "following the controversy over the last few days it was now a matter of urgency that this issue be investigated. The crisis in the beef industry must be addressed and confidence must be restored. We must also ensure that the interest of the consumer be protected."

The Tánaiste said that she will be asking the Independent Group to report to her within three months.
