Regret at announced closure of AFL Dundalk

1st November

"This is a major blow to the workers, their families and indeed to the North East region and I very much regret the company's decision and its obvious impact".

Mary Harney, Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, was commenting on today's announcement by AFL, that it intends to close its Dundalk facility at the end of March 2002 with the loss of 320 jobs.

The Tánaiste said "this closure is a very disappointing development for County Louth. The county has in the past suffered severe economic problems but in recent years has seen a major boost to its economy through the attraction of major foreign investors and a growth in indigenous industry. We must now focus on ensuring that this trend continues."

"I have asked all the Development Agencies to focus their efforts on seeking a new investor for this facility and I have asked FAS to ensure that everything possible is done to assist these workers. I understand that the company will explore all possibilities including offering outplacement support and training opportunities for new employment."
