Henniges Elastomers to Close Ballina Facility
Mary Harney, Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment said today (Thursday 11th January 2001) that following the announcement by Henniges Elastomers Ireland that it will close its operation with the loss of over 170 jobs, "the immediate priority is to seek an alternative industry for Ballina".
The Tánaiste said that, "Henniges and its excellent workforce has over the last 11 years contributed greatly to the economic life of the Mayo region and today’s announcement comes as a great shock to all those concerned. I understand that the company, which operates in a highly competitive market, has suffered severe financial losses over the last few years", the Tánaiste added.
"The Government’s current strategy is to ensure that 50% of all new jobs are located in the Border, Midlands and West Region and we must now ensure that Ballina figures prominently in this effort. I have asked the IDA and other State Agencies to actively promote Ballina as a 0 location for new investment particularly bearing in mind that there is a period of nine months or so before the company fully closes. The availability of a prime facility and a highly committed workforce will be a strong attraction for potential investors", the Tánaiste concluded.
