Address by Mr. Noel Treacy TD.,

Minister for Science, Technology and commerce

At the ACCA Environmental Reporting Awards,

In the Press Centre, Government Buildings

At 12 Noon on Thursday 13th December 2001

I am very happy to be here today for this inaugural event.

I would like to thank the ACCA for initiating this new scheme. It reflects very well on the Association that they are concerned about the wider impact which companies have on the world and are persuading businesses to widen their auditing and reporting activities beyond financial data.

We are all increasing aware of environmental issues and indeed of the impact which certain business activities can have on our environment. While we all enjoy the fruits of new products and services, it is very desirable that we are also aware of the environmental impact which the manufacture or delivery of these goods and services can have on our precious environment.

I am glad to see there was a good entry for the first year of this scheme. I know that a wide cross section of business activity participated. While not all entrants can be winners, I would like to complement all of the entrants. Their participation displays an enthusiasm for the concept and they can reassure themselves that they have a head start over most companies.

There is an increasing range of new legislation, particularly from the EU, placing additional responsibilities on business in relation to environmental matters. Increased environmental awareness, as shown by participation in this scheme, will assist companies to embrace this new challenge.

To conclude I will now hand you back to Roger Acton for the announcement of the award winners.

The winners were announced at the ceremony. The overall winner is the Musgrave Group and commendations have been awarded to Coillte Teoranta, Intel Ireland Ltd and Thermo King Europe.
