Tánaiste appoints National Training Advisory Committee
Committee will provide Tánaiste with independent, strategic advice in relation to training people in, and for, employment
The Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mary Harney T.D., today (Wednesday 14th November 2001) announced the appointment of the National Training Advisory Committee. The Committee will provide the Tánaiste with independent, strategic advice in relation to training people in, and for, employment.
“Now, more than ever, upskilling and training the labour force is absolutely critical to competitiveness and employability,” the Tánaiste said. “It is essential that we have the right strategies in place to continuously improve the skills and competencies of the labour force to enable them to adapt to changes in the economy. As well as improving the competitiveness of firms, up-skilling will help to secure the jobs of workers.”
The Tánaiste continued: “The National Training Advisory Committee will provide me with independent, strategic advice to ensure that national policies in relation to training people in employment and for employment are forward looking and relevant to the needs of the economy. The Committee has a huge range of expertise, covering many key sectors of the economy such as food, construction, IT and consumer products, and is representative of both employers and employees.”
As well as carrying out an advisory role in relation to issues of national training strategy generally, the Committee will advise the Tánaiste on the priorities to be addressed by the National Training Fund, which is now fully operational. The Tánaiste emphasised that the Committee is independent of the various agencies currently being subvented by the Training Fund. “As the National Training Fund is financed from employer contributions, it is appropriate that employers and their employee representatives should have an input to decisions on how NTF money is spent,” the Tánaiste said.
The Tánaiste concluded by expressing her appreciation of the willingness of the individual members to sit on the Committee. Details of the Committee members are attached.
