Tánaiste Officially Opens Galway Technology Centre

Mary Harney, Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment today (Monday 18th June 2001) officially opened the new Galway Technology Centre at Mervue Business Park, Galway.

Speaking at the opening the Tánaiste said "over the last number of years the internationally traded service sector has seen enormous growth in Ireland. With over 70% of employment in indigenous companies in this sector operating in the Dublin Region, the challenge now is to develop and grow this sector outside of Dublin, including here in Galway."”“

"The Galway Technology Centre has an excellent track record and is a very good example of what Enterprise Ireland aims to achieve under its new Regional Development Strategy. The Centre has now expanded to a state-of-the art 50,000 sq. ft (4,645 sq. metres) facility providing first class facilities for up to 21 technology based companies currently employing 148 people with the potential to create up to a further 350 jobs from this new expansion. It provides an ideal opportunity for businesses to network through the use of common facilities and provides both incubator space for potential high start up companies and "hot desks" to prospective projects that may be visiting the region or may wish to establish businesses in the future," the Tánaiste added.

The Tánaiste said "The Centre is an ideal location as a hub for the development of Information Technology and New Media activities. With strong support from the 3rd level institutions here in Galway, this fully serviced centre will be a showcase facility for the BMW region."

The Tánaiste complimented the Galway Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise Ireland and all those who have participated in the development of the Centre and wished all users of the Centre every success in the future
