Statement from Tánaiste Mary Harney following Closure Announcement by Peerless Rugs

Mary Harney, Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment today (Friday 25th May 2001) expressed her disappointment at the announcement by Peerless Rugs, that it is to cease operations at its Athy facility with the loss of 65 jobs.

The Tánaiste said, "the closure of the Athy facility is a severe blow to the workers concerned and the local community. Peerless Rugs has been a very valuable employer in the area for the last 27 years. Unfortunately it is yet another company which has found it increasingly difficult to compete with lower cost manufacturing locations. Its closure highlights the need to develop a positive enterprise environment in which newer more competitive business sectors can operate effectively and grow their sales in export markets".

The Tánaiste referred to her recent visit to Athy where she met representatives of the Athy Investment Development and Employment Forum. She said, "they could play a vital role in developing partnership between the local business community, local and county authorities and the relevant state agencies. Working together these groups can help ensure a prosperous future for the Athy area".

Following her discussion with local representative Senator John Dardis the Tánaiste said the main priority will be to find alternative employment for the workers effected by today’s announcement The Tánaiste also said she, "expected that the company would provide a fair and adequate severance package for the workers".
