Tánaiste Responds to 3Com Closure

Mary Harney, Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment has expressed her disappointment at the announced closure of 3Com Ireland in Blanchardstown.

The Tánaiste said that "despite the speculation over the last week this announcement will come as a great blow to both the workers, their families and indeed the wider community. It will be particularly regretful to this hard working and dedicated workforce that despite outperforming all contract manufacturing options available the company has chosen to relocate and outsource their operations elsewhere".

"I do not underestimate the challenge in finding alternative employment for these workers but in the area of the M50 ring I have over the last three years announced the creation of nearly 8,000 new jobs. I am confident that many of the workers may find alternative employment in the spread of these significant new investments in the region", the Tánaiste added.

The Tánaiste said she was aware 3Com is offering a generous redundancy package and will offer assistance in finding alternative employment. The Tánaiste has also asked FAS to assist in this process.
