Appointment of Members to the Employment Appeals Tribunal for a new term of office

The Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mr. Frank Fahey, T.D. has appointed 103 Members to the Employment Appeals Tribunal for the new term of office commencing on 30th January, 2004.

The Tribunal is an independent body bound to act judicially and was set up to provide a speedy, fair, inexpensive and informal means for individuals to seek remedies for alleged infringements of their statutory rights.

The Tribunal now consists of a Chairman, 31 Vice-Chairmen and a panel of 72 other members, 36 nominated by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and 36 nominated by organisations representative of employers.

Ms. Kate O'Mahony, barrister, is the sitting Chairman of the Tribunal whose term of office will expire next January. Ms. O'Mahony, originally appointed to the position of Chairman almost two years ago, is continuing the process of re-organisation and development in which the Tribunal has been engaged for some years now.

Minister Fahey has direct responsibility for appointing the Chairman and the Vice-Chairmen. He has appointed 31 Vice-Chairmen with effect from 30th January, 2004. He has also appointed 72 Ordinary Members. A list of all the members is attached.

In order to cope with the ever-growing volume of work he has increased the number of Vice-chairmen to 31, 8 more than previously and the number of Ordinary Members to 72, 12 extra.

Minister Fahey said he was pleased by the achievements of the Tribunal during its last term of office and wanted to pay tribute to the contribution of all the outgoing Members. The Tribunal remains well prepared to meet the ever-increasing demands being made on it to provide an effective and expeditious forum for the resolution of employment disputes.

Minister Fahey has asked all parties involved to enter the new term with renewed commitment to the provision of a fast, free and user-friendly service for the resolution of a wide range of employment related disputes.

The Minister hopes to meet with the new Tribunal shortly to discuss its operation and to consider the future direction of the Tribunal's work.
