Comments by Micheál Martin TD, Minister for Enterprise Trade and Employment at the official opening of Glanbia Innovation Centre, Kilkenny
Speaking today at the official opening of Glanbia’s Innovation Centre in Kilkenny, Minister Micheál Martin said the establishment of this centre is an important strategic development for both Glanbia and the Irish food industry
“This centre, supported by Enterprise Ireland, involves an investment of ¤15m over five years and currently employs 42 highly skilled research scientists. This number is set to increase to 52 in October this year when a further 700 sq metre expansion is complete. Reform of the Common Agriculture Policy as well as changes at WTO level has led to fundamental shifts in the Irish food sector. The future lies in the development of new and innovative high value added health enhancing food products through the application of science, technology and innovation - a key focus of the new Enterprise Ireland Strategy – Transforming Irish Industry.
The Irish food industry in general needs greater investment in research and product development if it is to move rapidly towards higher value added products and to respond effectively to market requirements. The potential for future growth in the industry is dependent on adopting a consumer led approach supported by innovation. The term innovation brings to mind cutting edge, scientific developments taking place in dedicated research facilities like this centre.
Earlier this week I announced a major investment by Dairygold in relation to the establishment of an Applied Food Sciences Research & Development Centre. I am pleased to see our major food companies like Glanbia and Dairygold leading the way in this regard and this significant R & D investment will considerably strengthen Glanbia’s competitive edge in the international marketplace.
Research in the centre is targeted at the rapidly expanding Functional Food/nutraceutical market. The whole nutraceuticals and health and wellness area is undergoing rapid growth, particularly in the US, and it presents a very exciting opportunity for Glanbia and the Irish food industry. Glanbia has already had success in this area with the “Everybody” probiotic product and I wish them continued success with this product and others which will emerge as a result of this centre.
By strengthening the link between these centres and our Third Level Institutes and research centres we aim to ensure that the maximum potential is derived from applied research - both in terms of new business establishment and technology transfer. In this regard, Glanbia’s establishment of a Scientific Advisory Committee, Chaired by Professor Gerald Fitzgerald of UCC, and with an international membership of some of the most eminent researchers in the world is especially welcome. This advisory group provides regular collaboration between Glanbia and the international research community and reviews, challenges and supports Glanbia’s innovation programme.
Initiatives like this point the way forward for the Irish Food Industry and I wish Glanbia every success with this Centre”, concluded Minister Martin.
