Minister Martin Pays Tribute to outgoing member of the Competition Authority
The Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment, Micheál Martin has paid tribute to outgoing member of the Competition Authority, Edward Henneberry who has announced that he is to leave his post in the New Year.
Minister Martin said: “Ted informed me some days ago that he would be resigning with effect from the end of January next. I am aware that he and his family have decided for personal reasons to return to the US. While I am extremely disappointed to be losing such an experienced Member of the Authority, I fully respect and appreciate Ted’s reasons for stepping down and I wish him and his wife and family nothing but the very best for the future.”
The Minister continued. “It is a measure of the esteem in which the Irish Competition Authority is held worldwide that we have been able in recent years to attract people of Ted Henneberry’s calibre to come and work in Ireland. He has made an enormous contribution to the development of the Authority’s work during his time here and has successfully seen the Authority through a period of immense change in terms of the Authority’s legislative role, their increasing resources and the ever expanding level of economic activity in the country.
“I am delighted that Ted will stay with us until the New Year by which time Stanley Wong will have joined the Authority. The process of filling the vacant position of Chairman is also well advanced and I hope to make an announcement on the outcome of that process shortly. In the meantime, I have appointed Ms Noreen Mackey, Legal Adviser with the Authority, and an extremely experienced competition lawyer, to be an interim Member of the Authority. Contrary to some wildly exaggerated reports, the Authority continues to be an effective an efficient agent for the enforcement of competition law in this country,” the Minister concluded.
