Minister Killeen Welcomes High Court Decision
Minister for Labour Affairs Mr. Tony Killeen T.D. has welcomed the decision of the High Court to grant an order to close a construction site in Waterford because of serious concerns in relation to unsafe work practices.
Ms Justice Mary Lafoy granted the an order, under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 against Andrew Hally with addresses at Cappoquin and Dungarvan, Co. Waterford in relation to a housing development project at The Brewery, Dungarvan.
The court heard evidence from Counsel on behalf of the Health and Safety Authority that the issue involved the renovation of a number of single storey terraced local authority houses.
Minister Killeen said “I very much welcome this decision which sends a strong message to all those in the construction sector who ignore Health and Safety Legislation. Those who fail to provide a safe environment for their workers will face the full rigors of the law resulting in both financial and reputational consequences for their businesses.”
“In 2005 some twenty three people lost their lives in the construction sector. This is totally unacceptable. Employers and employees alike must work together and put in place a proper health and safety management system to reduce and eliminate deaths and injuries in the workplace. Prevention should be the key word for all those engaged in this sector.” Minister Killeen added.
