Minister Martin and Minister Eagle meet to review North/South Economic Co-operation
The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Micheál Martin, T.D., met with his Northern counterpart, Economy Minister, Maria Eagle MP, today (Thursday 1st June 2006) to review progress on North/South economic co-operation across a range of issues. The two Ministers held their meeting in Newry.
Comprehensive study on North / South co-operation
Minister Martin said: “I am delighted to have this opportunity to review with Minister Eagle the arrangements for an unprecedented comprehensive study to identify areas for further co-operation in the development of the all-island economy. The emphasis of the study, which was announced recently by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dermot Ahern T.D. and the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Mr Peter Hain M.P., will be on delivery and tangible outcomes.”
This study is being carried out under the direction of key policy Departments, North and South, including the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment and the Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment. InterTradeIreland which has developed considerable expertise in areas of North / South cooperation will play a central co-ordination and facilitation role in this important process, working closely with relevant Departments, agencies and business interests, North and South.
Minister Eagle said: “The island of Ireland faces common external threats from globalisation which, by working together, we can help overcome. I am very encouraged by the high level of existing co-operation with an increasing number of companies already reaping rewards by trading or operating on an all-island basis.
Development of the North West
The two Ministers also reviewed co-operation on the development of the North West. Both Governments are committed to a joint approach that is focussing on enterprise development, employment, skills, spatial planning and infrastructure.
Minister Martin said: “There is a shared analysis North and South of the common problems in the North West Region of the island and a good deal of joint action already in the area of economic development. The solutions lie in joint policies, planning and action on a North/South basis. It is important that the two administrations give a clear lead and ensure an integrate approach.”
Minister Eagle said: “It is important that the Enterprise Departments and the economic development agencies, North and South, play their full part in advancing this work – the development of a modern, competitive, outward looking local economy is essential if we are to maintain a vibrant community in the North West”.
InterTradeIreland
The Ministers received a presentation on the current activities and priorities of InterTradeIreland, which has established an impressive track record in promoting the development of the all-island economy.
Minister Martin added “The work of the North/South Bodies established under the Good Friday Agreement is an example of the practical benefits of cooperation and the value of dedicated institutions to pursue these goals in the interests of all the people on the island. The Government is committed to supporting the work of the North/South Bodies and to seeing them realise their full potential. The North/South Bodies are a vital and dynamic element of the Good Friday Agreement.”
