Minister Kelleher - EAT to increase number of hearings in Cork

Mr Billy Kelleher TD, Minister for Labour Affairs today Tuesday 25th September 2007 addressed the HR Conference in the Clarion hotel in Cork.

Speaking at the Conference the Minister highlighted the progress with some of the key commitments of the Government under Towards 2016.

In relation to the Employment Appeals Tribunal the Minister said, “ In Towards 2016, the Government has committed to increasing the staffing resources of the employment rights bodies. My Department has already increased the number of secretaries for Tribunal hearings and further staff will be assigned by the end of the year.”

Minister Kelleher continued, “ These additional resources will be for hearings outside Dublin where the waiting times for cases to be heard is the longest. Cork has the highest number of cases awaiting hearing and I am pleased to say that from the 8th of October the Tribunal will hold two divisions every week in Cork until Christmas. In the same period last year the Tribunal sat on 28 days, this year the Tribunal will sit on 100 days. This will not decrease the number of sittings in other counties. With increased hearings I expect the waiting period for cases, including those in Cork, to fall significantly.”

Notes for Editors

EAT

The Employment Appeals Tribunal was established to provide a speedy, inexpensive and relatively informal means of determining issues in relation to employment rights. The Tribunal is a valuable service to both employees and employers and is a key mechanism in the State’s dispute resolution process. The Tribunal sits in divisions of three members. A division is composed of a member from each of three panels, that is one member from the panel nominated by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, one member from the panel nominated by employers’ organisations and the Chairman, or a vice-chairman, either a barrister or solicitor appointed by the Minister. The Tribunal hears claims and appeals under sixteen pieces of legislation with its main focus being on unfair dismissals and redundancy cases.
