Cordis Medical Device Manufacturing Facility Opens in Cashel

Billy Kelleher TD, Minister for Labour Affairs at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, today (Tuesday 2nd December 2008) officiated at the official opening of the new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, development laboratory and finished goods testing facility in Cashel, Co. Tipperary, for Cordis Corporation, a worldwide leader in developing and manufacturing interventional vascular technology. The investment, announced in July 2006, is supported by Government through IDA Ireland.

The new facility features some of the most advanced production equipment available globally, while the development laboratory will help to design and test future generations of manufacturing technology and drug-device products.

Minister Kelleher said: “This significant investment by Cordis re-affirms Ireland as a leading location for manufacturing and development of innovative healthcare products. Cordis is a member of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, which has had a presence in Ireland for over 70 years and already has five other facilities operating here. I wish to congratulate Cordis for the speed with which this investment has developed. It is excellent news for Cashel and the surrounding region and will provide a substantial boost to the economy of the area.”

Victor Chance, Vice President, Worldwide Operations, Cordis Corporation, commented: “This facility represents our continued commitment to delivering innovative solutions that save lives and improve the quality of life of people suffering from cardiovascular disease, the world’s leading cause of death. We greatly appreciate our partnership with the Department of Enterprise, Trade, and Employment, and we look forward to much success here in Cashel.”

The 180,000 square foot Cashel facility will produce Cordis’ innovative, next-generation drug-eluting stent – known as the NEVO™ Sirolimus-eluting Coronary Stent – for treatment of patients suffering from coronary artery disease. The NEVO® Stent, which is currently being evaluated in two major clinical trials around the world, utilises a unique technology that incorporates hundreds of small reservoirs, each acting as a depot into which drug-polymer compositions are loaded.  This revolutionary design allows drug delivery from an implant the surface of which is 75% polymer-free bare metal upon insertion and becomes fully bare metal following drug delivery and polymer bioresorption in approximately three months.

Notes to Editors
Drug-eluting stents

A stent is a small lattice-shaped metal device that is inserted permanently into an artery that has become too narrow. The stent acts as a scaffold to hold the artery open to maintain blood flow. Drug-eluting stents contain drugs to reduce the chances that the arteries will become blocked again. They are designed to deliver these into the system in a controlled timed release.

Cordis NEVO® Stent

The NEVO® Stent, which is currently being evaluated in the RES-ELUTION Trial, will be the first and only reservoir-based, sirolimus-eluting stent that evolves into a bare-metal stent over time, promising a greater level of delivery ease and clinical security for the interventional cardiologist.
