Minister O’Keeffe opens McAfee office in Cork as tech firm workforce reaches 280
13 May, 2010
The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe TD, today [Thursday] opened the new office of the technology security firm, McAfee, in Cork which now employs 280 workers.
The move follows an announcement last September that McAfee was to create 100 jobs, bringing the workforce in Cork to 280.
The new 45,000sq/ft office, which will support the company’s inside sales team servicing mid-market customers in Europe, Middle-East and Africa (EMEA), is in City Gate, Mahon, Co Cork.
Minister O’Keeffe was joined at the official opening of the new office by the president and chief executive of McAfee, Dave DeWalt.
McAfee has been operating in Cork since 2004 and its previous Irish headquarters were in EastGate, Little Island.
Opening the new office, Minister O’Keeffe said the company’s investment ‘secures Ireland’s place as a leading location for the information communications technology sector’.
‘McAfee offers high-value career opportunities to Cork and the wider region and recruitment is already well under way.
‘This investment is a significant endorsement of Cork and Ireland by a global high-tech player company and it demonstrates our capacity to attract high-quality jobs in line with the Government’s plan for the "smart" economy,' said Minister O’Keeffe.
The president of EMEA McAfee, David Quantrell, said: ‘I am thrilled to be here in Cork today along with Minister O’Keeffe and our president and chief executive, Dave DeWalt.
‘The new office really consolidates our presence here in Cork and I look forward to many years of working with the team here in Ireland.
‘Since we established our presence six years ago, this team has not only been at the heart of much of what the company does in EMEA but also our Asia-Pacific and international markets.’
The president and chief executive of McAfee, Dave DeWalt, said: ‘Our new office location and continued recruitment efforts in Cork validate our commitment to Ireland and the local workforce.
‘I am extremely proud of the Cork operation and the talented team that works here.
‘Through our recent recruitment process, we have selected many innovative and highly motivated professionals who have both strong educational backgrounds and multilingual abilities.
‘The people we employ here are really a strong foundation for our success.’
The chief executive of IDA Ireland, Barry O’Leary, said: ‘The creation of an additional 100 jobs by McAfee since September 2009 demonstrates Ireland’s continued ability to provide a nurturing environment where leading-edge corporations can continue to expand.
‘The Cork operation has gone from strength to strength since its establishment here in 2004 and on behalf of IDA Ireland I look forward to working closely with the company to ensure the continued development of the Irish facility.’
Now almost twice its previous size, the McAfee office in Cork is the headquarters for much of the company’s international operations including global localisation and product readiness, EMEA finance, procurement, operations and logistics for EMEA and Asia Pacific, as well as EMEA inside sales.
The move reinforces the role the Cork site plays for McAfee as the heart of much of its international and pan-EMEA activity.
