Ministers focus on new industrial and innovation policy for EU - Minister Lenihan

15 July 2010

Europe´s new industrial policy must focus on the Agrifood, Tourism and ICT sectors according to Minister for Science, Technology & Innovation Conor Lenihan TD, at a European competitiveness council meeting in Brussels today.

"The Agrifood and Beverages sector is one of Europe´s biggest industry and needs to deliver more value added revenue as the world´s population grows," said Minister of State Lenihan.

European Industry Ministers are today in Brussels discussing a new European industry and innovation policy which is aimed at puling the EU out of recession.

"It is our view that European Research & Development needs to be strengthened with more venture capital for small but growing European companies that wish to go global", said Minister Lenihan.

Minister Lenihan made his comments following a meeting with EU Commissioner for Research, Innovation & Science Maire Geoghegan Quinn.

"70% of EU GDP emanates from manufacturing and innovation policy must focus on driving research towards these industrial sectors that are heavily involved in R&D", added Minister Lenihan.

"Ireland´s policies on innovation are being held up as an example at European level," said Minister Lenihan.
