Minister Bruton announces 45 jobs as part of the Expansion Plan Enterprise Ireland Supported Investment of ¤20m Supports the Growing Demand for Infant and Toddler Milks in Europe
Danone Baby Nutrition, the manufacturer and distributor of specialised infant and toddler milks, today announced that it is investing ¤20 million in its Wexford manufacturing facility to meet growing demand for its products across the European market. This investment will create approximately 45 new jobs at the Wexford plant and builds on the ¤50m that has been invested in the company’s other Irish based manufacturing facility in Macroom, Co. Cork since December 2010. As with the Macroom investment the ¤20m investment in Wexford is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through Enterprise Ireland.
Speaking at the facility in Wexford, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton T.D. said: “Building and developing our manufacturing industries is a key part of the Government’s plans for jobs and growth, and we have committed to achieving a net increase of 20,000 in the number of people at work in this sector by 2016. Key to this will be exploiting the strengths that we have developed and building on industries and sectors already thriving here. Today’s announcement that Danone, a world-leading company in this particular sector, is investing ¤20million in its Wexford manufacturing plant and creating 45 jobs is a real endorsement of the quality of our agriculture and our industry, and is great news for the South East. I welcome the continued support from Danone and look forward to building on this announcement in the years to come.”
The decision to expand the operations in Ireland coincides with the 125th anniversary of manufacturing Cow & Gate infant and toddler milks in Ireland and underscores the continued importance of the Irish operations to the company globally. The company also manufactures the Aptamil product range in Macroom and Wexford.
The investment will fund a new processing and packing line as well as lead to increased employment in areas such as operations, food science, engineering and logistics. The expansion will double the capacity of the facility to 70,000 tonnes annually in finished packed product of brands including Aptamil and Cow & Gate.
Construction of the new facility commenced in March and is scheduled to be completed by January of next year with commercial operations commencing in February. A total of 120 people are being employed for the duration of the construction phase.
Detailing today’s announcement, Donal Courtney, Managing Director, Danone Ireland said: “We are delighted to announce our plans for further expansion in Ireland. Danone Baby Nutrition’s focus on research and innovation continues to enhance the nutritional value of our products for infants and toddlers leading to continued growth in demand from across Europe for our milk products which include Aptamil and Cow & Gate.
“I would like to recognize the continued support from the Government and its agencies, particularly Enterprise Ireland. This additional commitment builds on the ¤50m investment announced for Macroom last year. The combined expansion of both sites makes Ireland a very strategic location for the Danone Group and one that is playing a significant role in the continued growth and success of the company.”
Operations Director, Danone Baby Nutrition, Donal Dennehy said:”Danone has a long and positive experience of manufacturing here – we first started to manufacture Cow & Gate products in Ireland 125 years ago so it is fantastic that we are further deepening our roots and our commitment during this celebratory year. The continued investments in our Irish operations means that Ireland is now home to the most technologically advanced production facilities in the region and positions us well for continued growth into the future.
“In addition to the creation of 45 new jobs and the jobs created during construction phase I am delighted that the expansion of our production is having a significant impact on the farming community throughout Ireland. The quality of product consistently delivered to Danone by the local farming community is a key strength when we compete for new investment here in Ireland.”
In addition to the quality of the supply chain in Ireland there are a number of other factors which contributed to the selection of the Wexford facility for this new investment. These included the strong track record of quality production at the Wexford factory, synergies with its sister manufacturing facility in Macroom, the track record of the team in Ireland and the support of the Irish Government and Enterprise Ireland.
