Science Foundation Ireland (SFI)
Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), established by the Irish Government in 2000, is a pivotal organisation in the implementation of Ireland’s research and development strategy and ongoing economic development. The work of SFI plays a key role in underpinning the efforts of its sister enterprise agencies, IDA Ireland and Enterprise Ireland.
SFI invests in academic researchers and research teams in Ireland’s third level institutions. SFI grants are awarded to top-class scientists who are deemed most likely to generate new knowledge, leading edge technologies and competitive enterprises in the fields of science and engineering in three broad areas:
Information and Communications Technology
Sustainable energy and energy-efficient technologies
These grants are awarded following a detailed international peer-review process, including a strategic assessment of the future needs of Irish enterprise.
SFI also works closely with education, government, and industry bodies that support its fields of emphasis and actively promotes Ireland’s ensuing achievements around the world.
SFI funded researchers are currently connected to over 500 companies and are also involved in a multiple of international collaborations spanning 58 countries globally.
Details of some of the SFI-funded research can be viewed at the SFI Research Showcase
