Advanced Search Help
The advanced search facility allows you to control the results of your search to limit the number of hits returned, and arrange the results in the order you prefer. By default, all pages on the website are searched. This includes HTML pages, and PDF and Word documents. This may result in too many irrelevant hits being returned. The website is organised into three main areas for searching.
- Press Releases
- Publications
The Divisions are further divided into an area for each division, and each division can be searched separately. Each division is divided into Units or Sections. Units cannot be searched separately.

Press Releases are divided into a number of areas, one for each year since 1998.
Publications are divided into a number of areas, one for each main subject covered by the Department. Within each subject, publications are further subdivided into years.
Each of the advanced search fields is described below.

Sort by
The order in which results are sorted can be modified by specifing what criteria to use for sorting. The following table explains each of the options available.
| Option | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Relevance | When searching for a term, each page is assigned a score according to the degree of relevance with the term. |
| Last Modified Date | Chronologically sorted by the date of last modification |
| Document Title | Alphabetically sorted by the title of the page |
| Document Path | Alphabetically sorted by the URL of the page |
- Sort by Last Modified Date to see the most recently changed pages first. This is most useful when searching Press Releases.
- When searching a particular Division, sort by Document Path to group the results from each Unit within the Division together.
- When searching Publications, sort by Document Path to group the results for each subject together.
Order by
The results of the search can be returned in either ascending or descending order. Use Descending order to see the most relevant hits first.
If sorting results alphabetically (using either Document Title or Path), then use Ascending order to sort beginning from the letter A rather than Z.
