Green Enterprise Development

Competitiveness and Climate Change Unit

The Competitiveness and Climate Change Unit has responsibility for Green Enterprise Development Policy. This means supporting green enterprise and the environmental goods and services sector in terms of Enterprise Policy and acting as an advocate for the sector across all Government Departments and policy areas.

The OECD and Eurostat define the environmental goods and services industry as consisting of activities which produce goods and services to measure, prevent, limit, minimise or correct environmental damage to water, air and soil, as well as problems related to waste, noise and eco systems. This includes cleaner technologies, products and services that reduce environmental risk and minimise pollution and resource use.

With a view to developing business opportunities within the environmental goods and services sector on the island of Ireland, Forfás, at the request of the Department and in conjunction with InterTradeIreland, commissioned research in the area. The result of the research was a study published in October 2008 “Environmental Goods and Services Sector on the Island of Ireland, Enterprise Opportunities and Policy Implications”. A copy of this study can be accessed at this link - Forfás Study.

Following on from a commitment in Building Ireland’s Smart Economy, the Government’s Framework on Sustainable Economic Renewal (link to Smart Economy document), the Tánaiste has set up a High Level Action Group on Green Enterprise.

High Level Action Group on Green Enterprise

The High Level Action Group on Green Enterprise was launched by the Tánaiste in May 2009. A copy of the press release can be accessed at this link - press release. The Group has been meeting regularly with a view to reporting to Government with an Action Plan by October 2009.

The Terms of Reference as agreed by Government can be accessed at the following link:
