The following categories of licence are issued by the Export Licensing Section:

Individual dual-use export licences

These licences cover the export of a stated quantity and value of controlled items to a stated end-user, and are valid for 12 months.

Global dual-use export licences

These licences cover the export of a stated quantity and value of controlled items to a list of approved countries. They are valid for six months and the exporter is obliged to provide this Department, every three months, with a list of all exports that have taken place.

Community General Export Authorisation (CGEA)

This licence, issued by the European Community, allows exporters to export a range of dual-use items to 10 specified countries without the need to apply to national licensing authorities. Certain conditions apply to the use of the CGEA, including the requirement to notify the Department that the exporter is availing of the CGEA.

Military licences

A military export licence is required for the export of any items defined in the Control of Exports Order 2000 to any destination. The licence is valid for 12 months.

International Import Certificates

The Licensing Unit is responsible for issuing International Import Certificates to Irish companies wishing to import certain types of controlled goods. An international import certificate is an undertaking by an importer to import specific goods into Ireland and not to re-export them without the appropriate approval of the relevant Licensing authority. These certificates are usually requested from importers by the licensing authority of the exporting country. In order to obtain an International Import Certificates, a company must complete a prescribed application form that is available from the Department's Licensing Unit. An International Import Certificate ceases to be valid unless presented to the competent foreign authorities within six months from its date of issue.
